A major accident occurred on the Mumbai–Bengaluru Highway in the early hours of Thursday, resulting in two fatalities and two serious injuries.
According to reports, a car traveling from Mumbai towards Pune collided with a truck near Eidgah ground on the Pune-bound road. The vehicle, a Swift Dzire with registration number MH-14-EH-7503, rammed into an Eicher container truck bearing registration MH-46-BM-3410.
Out of the four passengers in the car, two died on the spot. The deceased have been identified as Siddhant Anand Shekhar (22) and Divyaraj Singh Rathod (20). The other two occupants, Nihal Tamboli (20) and Harshvardhan Mishra (21), sustained serious injuries and have been admitted to Lifeline Hospital in Wakad for treatment.
All four passengers were students of Symbiosis BBA and were returning from Lonavala at the time of the accident.
Following the incident, Dehu Road Police and PCMC firefighters promptly reached the scene to rescue the injured and recover the deceased. The bodies of Siddhant Anand and Divyaraj Singh Rathod were sent to YCM Hospital in Pimpri for post-mortem procedures.
Sr. PI Vikram Bansode of Dehu Road Police Station confirmed that the truck driver, Manish Kumar Suraj Manipaal (39), has been taken into custody. Both the car and the truck have been seized, and legal action is underway.
Interestingly, just two days prior to the accident, white stripes were painted on the highway near the accident site to control vehicle speeds. However, some local residents have alleged that these speed control measures, including recently installed speed bumps, may have contributed to the fatal accident.
Authorities are investigating the exact cause of the collision as efforts continue to ensure the safety of commuters on this busy highway.
