Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi spoke with Nepal’s interim Prime Minister, Sushila Karki, on Thursday, expressing his condolences over the recent violence in Nepal. The unrest has resulted in the deaths of at least 59 protesters, 10 prisoners, and three policemen.

The protests were initially triggered by the government’s ban on social media platforms such as Facebook and Instagram. However, they quickly evolved into a broader movement against government corruption and unemployment.

### Diplomatic Communication

PM Modi took to X (formerly Twitter) to share details of his conversation with PM Karki. He wrote:

> “Had a warm conversation with Mrs. Sushila Karki, Prime Minister of the Interim Government of Nepal. Conveyed heartfelt condolences on the recent tragic loss of lives and reaffirmed India’s steadfast support for her efforts to restore peace and stability.”

He also extended warm greetings to the people of Nepal on their National Day, celebrated on September 19.

### Interim Leadership

In the wake of the deadly protests, Sushila Karki was appointed as Nepal’s first woman interim prime minister. Her appointment came through an impromptu vote on Discord by young anti-corruption protesters, following the resignation of former PM KP Sharma Oli and his cabinet.

Karki is a former chief justice with a strong anti-corruption track record. During her tenure as chief justice, she oversaw landmark cases, including the conviction of a sitting minister for corruption.

### How the Protest Turned Violent

Initially sparked by frustration over the government’s ban on popular social media platforms, the protests rapidly grew into a larger movement addressing corruption and unemployment issues. Generation Z protesters took to the streets with banners and slogans demanding change.

The situation escalated into violence, with security forces responding using live ammunition, tear gas, and batons. Meanwhile, rioters toppled barricades, looted businesses, and set fire to government offices and the homes of political leaders.

### Looking Ahead

Nepal is scheduled to hold national elections on March 5, 2026, as the country seeks to restore peace and democratic governance following these turbulent times.
