India’s assistant coach Ryan ten Doeschate has confirmed that star pacer Jasprit Bumrah is expected to feature in the upcoming two-match Test series against the West Indies. The series is set to begin on October 2 at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad.
### Bumrah Set to Feature in West Indies Tests
Speaking ahead of India’s clash with Bangladesh, ten Doeschate emphasized the importance of match practice for Bumrah. “It’s unlikely that Bumrah will be rested. He’s set to play the West Indies Tests. We’ve got important matches coming up, and it’s good for him to keep playing and get more match time,” he said.
### Reflecting on Asia Cup Performance
India recently registered a six-wicket victory over Pakistan in their first Super Four match of the Asia Cup. Despite the win, ten Doeschate described the team’s performance as somewhat “scrappy.” He noted, “We weren’t clinical enough. The last week has been tough, but the way the boys played in those two games was amazing.”
He also spoke about the squad rotation strategy employed during the Asia Cup and other bilateral series. According to him, the team experimented to provide opportunities to various players while managing workloads effectively.
### Managing Bumrah’s Workload
Bumrah’s workload has been a topic of discussion since the England tour, where he played three out of five Tests to manage his fitness. However, with the Asia Cup being a T20-format tournament, such workload concerns have been less pressing.
During the Asia Cup, Bumrah was impressive in matches against the UAE and Pakistan but missed the game against Oman. In the Super Four clash versus Pakistan, he conceded 45 runs in four overs. Despite that, he is now expected to play in the upcoming Test series against the West Indies.
### Historical Note: Bumrah’s Last Test Against West Indies
Jasprit Bumrah last featured in a Test against the West Indies during India’s 2019 tour. That series was memorable for Bumrah, as he recorded career-best bowling figures of 6/27. Notably, he also made history by taking an incredible hat-trick in the second Test of that series.
