At the Southeast Asian Games in Malaysia, it's standing room only at Kuala Lumpur's purpose-built petanque arena as hundreds of fans gather, shouting football-style chants. Petanque, where players compete to throw steel balls closest to a smaller ball, or jack, is a common sight in the parks and beaches of France, which bequeathed it to its former colonies such as Cambodia, Vietnam and Laos. Thailand announced on Tuesday that it would “clarify misunderstandings” following a decision by the world governing body of petanque to effectively bar the nation from hosting the sport at this year’s Southeast Asian (SEA) Games.

The World Petanque and Bowls Federation (WPBF) stated that it would not endorse the petanque competition scheduled to take place during the SEA Games, which are set for December 9-20 in Thailand. This decision comes amid allegations related to the organization and management of the event.

Further details from both parties are expected as Thailand seeks to address the concerns raised by the WPBF and ensure the smooth inclusion of petanque in the upcoming Games.
