Ukraine restores diplomatic relations with Syria, Zelensky says

**Ukraine Restores Diplomatic Relations with Syria, Zelensky Announces**

In a significant development, Ukraine has restored diplomatic relations with Syria. The move comes after a period of severed ties that began in 2022, when Ukraine broke off relations following the Syrian government’s recognition of Russian-occupied regions in Ukraine as “independent” territories.

Back in 2022, the government led by Syrian President Bashar al-Assad officially acknowledged swathes of Ukrainian territory under Russian occupation, a decision that led to a diplomatic rift between Kyiv and Damascus.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky made the announcement during a meeting with Italian President Sergio Mattarella at the Quirinale Palace in Rome, Italy, on July 9, 2025.

This decision marks a notable shift in Ukraine’s diplomatic stance amidst ongoing geopolitical challenges and reflects evolving international relations in the region.
