**IMD Issues Red Alert for Mumbai, Thane, Raigad, and Palghar Due to Heavy Rainfall**

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a red alert for Mumbai, Thane, Raigad, and Palghar districts effective Sunday, lasting until Monday morning. This warning comes amidst forecasts of extremely heavy rainfall, accompanied by thunderstorms and isolated lightning strikes.
### Current Rainfall Situation
On Saturday, parts of Mumbai experienced moderate to heavy rain under a yellow alert. Colaba recorded 54mm of rainfall, while Santacruz received 12mm in the past 24 hours. So far this September, Mumbai has accumulated 445mm of rain, surpassing the normal monthly average of 380mm.
### Alerts in Other Districts
Apart from the red alert regions, the IMD has issued an orange alert for several other districts in Maharashtra, including Nanded, Latur, Beed, Hingoli, Parbhani, and Dharashiv. Since September 20, incessant rainfall has severely impacted Marathwada, causing widespread damage and distress to farmers.
### Relief Measures and Government Response
The Maharashtra government is actively disbursing funds to flood-affected farmers, aiming to deliver relief before Diwali. Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde emphasized the urgency of support on Saturday.
In response to the crop damage, Shiv Sena (UBT) chief Uddhav Thackeray has demanded a full loan waiver for affected farmers and called for a special legislative session to address the issue.
### Disaster Preparedness and Response
The National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) has been placed on high alert in Mumbai and Thane, deploying six teams across Maharashtra for prompt relief operations. Two teams each are stationed in Solapur and Dharashiv districts, while Beed and Latur each host one team.
The IMD has cautioned about possible inundation in low-lying areas and flash floods resulting from the heavy showers.
### Public Advisory
Authorities have urged residents to strictly adhere to official instructions, avoid hazardous zones, and refrain from traveling to flood-prone areas. People are advised against taking shelter under trees during thunderstorms and to exercise all necessary flood safety precautions.
Additionally, the IMD has warned of potential disruptions to road, rail, air, and ferry transport over the coming days due to adverse weather conditions.
