The Bombay High Court has ordered the Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) to return actor Rhea Chakraborty’s passport, marking a significant relief for the actor. Chakraborty was arrested in a drugs case in 2020, following the untimely death of actor Sushant Singh Rajput.
### Background and Bail Conditions
Rhea Chakraborty was arrested in September 2020 and granted bail the following month. As a condition of her bail, she was required to deposit her passport with the NCB and obtain permission from the trial court before any foreign travel. However, Chakraborty recently filed an application, through advocate Ayaz Khan, seeking the return of her passport citing missed professional opportunities due to travel restrictions.
### Professional Travel Needs
Advocate Ayaz Khan emphasized that Chakraborty’s profession demands frequent international travel for shoots, meetings, and auditions. He pointed out that she has complied fully with all bail conditions and has not violated any court orders.
### NCB’s Opposition and Court’s Observations
The NCB, represented by advocate SK Halwasia, opposed the plea alleging special treatment due to Chakraborty’s celebrity status and the potential risk of flight.
However, Justice Neela Gokhale observed that similar relaxations had been granted to other accused in the case. The court noted that Chakraborty has cooperated throughout the trial, returned promptly after every approved foreign trip, and never breached bail conditions. The court found “no reason to doubt” her availability for the conclusion of the trial.
### Court’s Directives
While approving the plea, the bench imposed certain conditions:
– Chakraborty must continue to attend all trial dates unless excused by the trial court.
– Before traveling abroad, she must submit her full itinerary—including hotel and flight details—to the prosecuting agency at least four days in advance.
### Case Update
In March, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) submitted a closure report for the investigation into Sushant Singh Rajput’s death, concluding that there was no sign of foul play.
