**Meta to Use Private AI Chat Conversations for Ad Targeting**

Meta has unveiled plans to leverage users’ conversations with its AI chatbot to enhance ad targeting across its platforms, including Facebook and Instagram. Starting December 16, interactions with the AI will be used to personalize the content and advertisements users see, with notifications about this change rolling out from October 7.
**How the New Ad Targeting Works**
According to Christy Harris, Meta’s privacy policy manager, the data collected from one-on-one chats with the AI chatbot will serve as an additional input to customize users’ feeds and ads. For example, if a user discusses hiking during an AI chat, they may later receive recommendations for hiking groups or ads promoting hiking gear.
This marks a significant shift from traditional ad targeting methods, which typically do not incorporate personal conversations.
**User Consent and Privacy Considerations**
The new feature will be introduced in most regions worldwide, excluding the UK, EU, and South Korea. Notably, Meta has stated that users will not have the option to opt out of this data collection.
However, the company assures that the AI chatbots will not collect data related to sensitive subjects such as religious beliefs, sexual orientation, or political opinions.
**The Growing Trend of Monetizing AI Tools**
Despite the controversy surrounding this move, Meta’s generative AI tools already engage over 1 billion monthly active users across its apps. Other tech giants like Google and Amazon have also started monetizing their AI services, primarily through cloud-based offerings.
Meta’s approach of integrating AI chat interactions directly into ad targeting is distinctive in both its scale and scope, signaling a new direction in how user data is leveraged for advertising in the AI era.
