Nara’s Shosoin Opens Treasure House

At 10 a.m., an imperial envoy along with officials from the Imperial Household Agency performed a purification ritual by washing their hands and rinsing their mouths with water. Following this, they proceeded to the West Repository, where they unlocked the doors that had been closed for an entire year.

Each year during this period, a thorough two-month inspection and survey of the treasured items is conducted. This careful process ensures the preservation and proper documentation of these invaluable artifacts.

During the same period, 67 items, including the renowned Ruri no Hai (Lapis Lazuli Cup), will be showcased for public viewing.

The Shosoin Exhibition is scheduled to take place at the Nara National Museum from October 25th to November 10th. Visitors will have the unique opportunity to witness these historic treasures firsthand.
