Mumbai: Byculla’s Veermata Jijabai Bhosale Udyan and Zoo is set to introduce a new reptile house featuring 13 species, including the Indian cobra, rock python, and striped keelback. The ground-plus-one structure is currently in the final planning stage, with tenders expected to be floated within the next two months.
Once the tender process concludes, construction will begin, and the facility is slated to open to visitors within two years. The new reptile enclosure is proposed to be built opposite the hippopotamus exhibit within the zoo, spreading across an area of 500 square meters.
The existing reptile enclosure at Byculla Zoo, which once housed a variety of snakes, currently accommodates only two species — the Indian rock python and the rat snake. Due to the declining numbers, the current enclosure will be dismantled and reconstructed to better cater to the needs of the present reptiles while allowing space for additional species in the future.
The Central Zoo Authority has already given its approval for the project. The new reptile house will house 13 indigenous and exotic snake species, with a pair of each. Species expected to be featured include the Cobra, Indian Rock Python, Checkered Keelback, Russell’s Viper, Sea Snake, and others.
Each species will be kept in a separate glass enclosure designed to replicate its natural habitat. These enclosures will include naturalistic features such as rocks, trees, grass, and water to ensure a suitable and enriched environment for the snakes.
Informative display boards will be installed throughout the reptile house to help visitors identify and learn about the different reptile species.
“The tender will be floated within a month,” said Dr. Sanjay Tripathi, Director of Byculla Zoo. The habitat layout is currently being finalized by a consultant, after which the tender process will commence.
This new development aims to enhance the educational and conservation value of the zoo while providing visitors with an engaging and informative experience.
