Samsung may want to keep some secrets about the Galaxy XR, but even Google is sharing information ahead of its premiere. While Samsung is quietly preparing for the big reveal of the Project Moohan headset, Google is loudly revealing some details about the device.
The company has started showcasing apps that will work with Android XR on the Play Store, just days before the premiere of Samsung’s headset.
### Google Reveals the First Apps for the Samsung Galaxy XR Headset
A new section has appeared on the Play Store, promoting “immersive experiences made for your XR headset.” This page was spotted by Reddit user Important-Goal-8388 and reveals the first apps and games that will be available for Android XR.
Among the software featured are titles like *Asteroid*, *Vacation Simulator*, *Naver CHZZK XR*, and *NFL Pro Era*. These apps are grouped in a separate section within the Play Store that seems to promote live sports and immersive XR experiences.
The popular app *Virtual Desktop* has also been released on Google Play. This app is a leading tool that allows users to connect wirelessly to their computer to watch movies or play PCVR games. The presence of this app suggests that Android XR will support advanced use cases from the start.
### Android XR Launch Date and Device Specs
Samsung’s first Android XR device, likely called the Galaxy XR, will be revealed on **October 21 at 10 PM ET** during its “Worlds Wide Open” Virtual Galaxy Event. Although Samsung recently announced the event, the complete design of the device leaked earlier this month.
The Galaxy XR will feature the Snapdragon XR2+ Gen 2 chipset, which was introduced two years ago, and it will come with high-resolution micro-OLED panels.
This new device will directly compete with Apple’s Vision Pro, which recently got an upgrade with the new M5 chipset. However, Apple’s headset starts at a steep $3,499 and is relatively heavy—factors that could make Samsung’s offering more compelling for some users.
### Market Outlook and Final Thoughts
It’s exciting to see Apple Vision Pro finally getting a proper competitor. However, mixed reality headsets currently remain niche products with limited use cases. The high price tags will likely continue to pose a barrier to mainstream adoption.
While the Galaxy XR offers promise, it remains uncertain whether it will gain widespread popularity. Personally, although I’m eager to see what Samsung has in store, I’m doubtful that I would buy a Galaxy XR myself.
