Though further analysis by the National Veterinary Services Laboratories is pending, even a presumptive case is worrying. This concern isn’t primarily due to the possibility of spread to humans, which would be rare, but because of the risk that other birds could become infected.
This includes both wild and domesticated birds, such as chickens. So far, Hawaii has managed to avoid the massive culls at poultry farms seen elsewhere—losses that have significantly reduced egg production and driven up prices.
Given the current situation, nobody wants to face those challenges now.
