Letter: Many complexions to tenuous Gaza peace

Like many watching recent news—mostly focused on Israel’s reactions to the return of hostages taken on October 7, 2023—my heart skipped a beat in appreciation of this long-awaited good news.

It is long-awaited because Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has finally accepted a peace plan that largely mirrors the one proposed by President Joe Biden more than a year ago. While President Donald Trump deserves credit for holding Netanyahu’s feet to the fire, it is something he declined to do for far too long. Instead, Trump continued this country’s unconscionable military support to Israel as it continued the leveling of Gaza, killing and displacing indigenous Palestinians.

As we wait—with understandable skepticism—to see where this current positive moment takes us, we look for the media to appropriately cover news of Palestinian families celebrating the release from Israeli prisons of the several thousand men, women, and children long imprisoned without trial.
