Edison Motors aims to offer the same extended-range electric vehicle layout to owners who want to keep their existing trucks—by converting them with a specialized kit. The Canadian company, previously recognized for its diesel hybrid log haulers, is now applying a similar technology to passenger trucks, promising fuel cost savings of up to 30%.
Currently, Edison has two working prototypes: a Toyota Land Cruiser and a 1995 Dodge Ram. Both vehicles feature electric motors powering the front and rear axles directly. This approach differs from other solutions that place an electric motor on the truck’s original transfer case.
According to Edison Motors, their system offers several advantages:

– Reduced mechanical strain, as there are no U-joints.
– Batteries fit entirely under the vehicle’s frame, leaving the truck bed untouched.
While the Land Cruiser prototype carries some oversized components in its bed (borrowed from heavy-duty log trucks), the Dodge Ram’s conversion is neatly contained underneath the vehicle’s body.
### Powertrain and Battery Details
The Dodge Ram prototype features a Cummins diesel engine driving a generator, but once the kit is finalized, Edison plans to replace it with a CAT diesel engine. This commitment to diesel fuel sets Edison apart from other EREVs relying on gasoline.
In terms of specs, the retrofit kit will offer two options:
– A single electric motor producing 350 horsepower.
– A dual-motor setup delivering a combined 500 horsepower and 8,800 lb-ft of torque.
Powering the motors will be a lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery pack with a rated voltage of 600 volts and a capacity ranging between 60 and 90 kilowatt-hours. The kit will also support DC fast charging, although Edison has not yet disclosed the maximum charging power.
### Availability, Pricing, and Reservations
Both prototypes are undergoing real-world testing. Edison Motors plans to offer customers two versions of the kit:
– A DIY option for those who want to perform the conversion themselves.
– A ready-made, incomplete chassis designed to fit any truck body on top.
Pricing details haven’t been released, but the company estimates the kit will cost roughly one-third to one-half the price of a new pickup truck, depending on chosen options. Potential buyers should also account for labor costs associated with installation and remember that the benefits of the system depend on regular battery charging.
Edison is currently accepting $250 reservations, with deliveries expected to begin sometime next year.
