The Dallas Cowboys have been one of the most active forces in the trade market as of late. Cowboys owner and general manager Jerry Jones oversaw two high-profile exchanges with other franchises over the past offseason.
The first was a trade that brought former Pittsburgh Steelers wide receiver George Pickens into the fold, a move that has paid major dividends for franchise quarterback Dak Prescott—especially with his usual top target, CeeDee Lamb, missing time due to injury.
Dallas’s other major trade sent star pass rusher and arguably the best player on the Cowboys’ roster, Micah Parsons, to the Green Bay Packers after Parsons and Jones couldn’t agree to terms on a contract extension.
That move seems to have put the Cowboys in a bit of a bind, as their elite offense has been paired with one of the worst defenses in the league. Currently, the Cowboys are sitting with a mediocre record of 3-3-1.
Many fans want Jones to make another move ahead of the trade deadline so Dallas can make a serious playoff push behind its lethal offense. Now, Jones is revealing how he plans to approach the trade deadline.
“Just because we played well, all of a sudden everybody thinks, boy, you’re in the hunt, so it’s time to go out and gather up all of this talent that’s waiting around out here on the trees to add to it now that we feel good that we can be more competitive. That’s not realistic. What’s realistic is that if we do see an opportunity, we are in as good a shape as we’ve been in in years with (draft) picks, with financial with our (salary) cap, we’re in as good of shape as we’ve ever been,” Jones said, according to The Athletic’s Jon Machota.
He continued, “If we see a way to improve our team with a player that makes sense today, this year, next year to entertain it and look at it.”
Fans reacted to the shocking plan on social media.
“This sounds like we are about to sign GP and Aubrey and we need to make sure if we give up a top pick (aka cheap labor) it’s worth it. I’m cool with that philosophy,” one fan wrote on Twitter.
“Cool the jets. Beating a depleted Washington team is not a sign that the defense is fixed. Imagine the Cowboys without CD, Pickens, and Ferguson. Who could they beat?” another fan added.
“In the hunt for what, Jerry? A Super Bowl? Anybody who has watched this franchise for the last 25+ years knows that’s not the case,” someone else commented.
It’ll be interesting to see if Dallas makes a move as the trade deadline approaches.
