After two consecutive losses, the Buffalo Bills returned from their bye week desperate for a win against the Carolina Panthers in Week 8. While Buffalo had fallen to second place in the AFC East before the break, Bills quarterback Josh Allen didn’t seem to be in panic mode.
“Sometimes it’s the small things,” Allen told reporters when discussing what needs to be fixed. “You learn some things from these losses that maybe you don’t learn in wins, so we’re looking forward to trying to correct those and move on. It starts with me. We’re looking forward to getting back on track, having a good week of practice, trusting each other, and having fun. That’s what it comes down to.”
However, Allen and the Bills got off to a painfully slow start against the Panthers on Sunday, October 26. The passing game appeared dead, and the entire offense relied heavily on running back James Cook. Cook rushed for 153 yards in the first half alone—the most by any player in a first half since his older brother, Dalvin Cook, had 153 yards against the Pittsburgh Steelers in 2021.
The Bills’ passing game began to come alive in the second half, and Allen made NFL history in the process.
### Josh Allen Surpassed Cam Newton for the Most NFL Games with Both a Rushing and Passing Touchdown
Late in the second quarter, with the Bills leading 12-3, defensive end A.J. Epenesa intercepted Panthers quarterback Andy Dalton. This set up Allen for a one-yard rushing touchdown.
Early in the third quarter, Allen connected with slot receiver Khalil Shakir for a 54-yard touchdown pass. Following the score, the Bills announced on X that Allen now holds the record for the most games with both a passing and rushing touchdown in NFL history. The league’s reigning MVP officially surpassed Cam Newton, reaching 46 such games.
With 1:19 left in the third quarter, Allen rushed for another touchdown, extending Buffalo’s lead to 40-3.
Under head coach Sean McDermott, the Bills have remained undefeated following a bye week since 2017, continuing to show resilience and strength after mid-season breaks.
