Another year, another holiday season—and fans will be disappointed not to see *Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer* air on CBS. Last year marked the first time the beloved annual CBS Christmastime special left the network, returning to NBC in celebration of its 60th anniversary.
Widely considered the longest-running holiday special in television history, *Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer* first premiered in 1964 as a stop-motion animated special. As of now, NBC has not revealed its holiday lineup, but it’s assumed that *Rudolph* will be part of the schedule.
Based on Johnny Marks’ 1949 song “Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer,” which itself was inspired by Robert L. May’s 1939 poem of the same title, the special is narrated by Burl Ives as Sam the Snowman. He tells the story of Rudolph, a reindeer who is bullied by his peers because of his shiny, glowing red nose and is never allowed to join in any Reindeer Games.
Feeling isolated, Rudolph leaves home and embarks on a fantastic journey. Along the way, he befriends Hermey, an elf who dreams of becoming a dentist; Yukon Cornelius, a prospector; and a host of Misfit Toys. Throughout his adventure, Rudolph tries to avoid the Abominable Snow Monster.
Eventually, Rudolph returns home and saves Christmas by using his glowing red nose to guide Santa’s sleigh through foggy weather, ensuring that presents are delivered on time.
This year, CBS is also not airing two *Robbie the Reindeer* Christmas specials it typically shows: 1999’s *Hooves of Fire* and 2002’s *Legend of the Lost Tribe.*
Instead, viewers can look forward to *REINDEER IN HERE*, set to air on Saturday, December 6 at 8:00 PM ET on CBS. This special is based on the award-winning Christmas book and tells the heartwarming story of Blizzard (Blizz), a young reindeer living at the North Pole with an unusual trait—one antler is significantly smaller than the other. Blizz and his unique group of friends band together to save the future of Christmas.
