The US government has reportedly struck a major new deal with a leading technology company, AMD. The US Department of Energy (DOE) and AMD have agreed to a $1 billion contract under which AMD will build two advanced supercomputers for the federal department over the coming years.
According to a report by Reuters, which cited a statement from AMD and CEO Dr. Lisa Su, the collaboration aims to bolster the government’s computing capabilities significantly. Dr. Su and Energy Secretary Chris Wright revealed that the first of the two supercomputers is expected to be completed by 2029.
These state-of-the-art machines will support a variety of critical government initiatives, including the management of the US nuclear arsenal. In addition, they will play an important role in advancing medical research, particularly in areas related to cancer breakthroughs.
Secretary Wright emphasized that the partnership with AMD is set to accelerate technological growth across the US once the projects are implemented. This collaboration marks a significant step forward in strengthening the country’s supercomputing infrastructure and scientific innovation.
