Four years ago, Amazon Games launched the MMORPG *New World*. Since its release, the game has experienced a rollercoaster of events, including a significant refresh when it expanded to consoles as *New World: Aeternum*.
Following the conclusion of Season 10, the developers have announced that content updates for *New World* will come to an end. This decision coincides with the recent mass layoffs reportedly affecting Amazon, including its gaming division.
In a blog post published on the game’s official website this week, the *New World: Aeternum* development team outlined the future of the game. While new content updates will cease, the servers will remain online and accessible to players through 2026. The team also committed to providing at least six months’ notice should they need to shut down the servers at any point.
Players can continue to purchase in-game currency, download, and install the game for the foreseeable future. However, it’s important to note that there will be no refunds issued for certain in-game items, such as Masks of Fortune.
We reviewed *New World* in its original release back in 2021, as well as *New World: Aeternum* in late 2024. In both reviews, Editor Donovan Erskine found promise in the game, praising the experienced development team, even though it didn’t fully reach the ambitious heights many players hoped for.
This announcement marks a significant moment for *New World*, coming amid Amazon’s broader corporate restructuring. The company recently announced major layoffs affecting around 14,000 employees. While the *New World* team did not directly address the layoffs, it is confirmed that Amazon Games was among the divisions impacted.
Despite the end of content updates, fans of *New World* can continue to explore Aeternum and enjoy the game for years to come—at least until 2026.
