Troy Aikman highlighted the favorable officiating Patrick Mahomes receives from NFL referees following Kansas City’s 28-7 win over Washington on Monday. Aikman pointed to what he perceived as preferential treatment during ESPN’s broadcast after the Chiefs benefited from a late penalty.

In the fourth quarter, Commanders defensive tackle Jer’Zhan Newton was flagged for unnecessary roughness when he threw Mahomes to the ground after the whistle on a sack attempt. At that point, Kansas City was already leading by three touchdowns. Although the Chiefs didn’t add points on the extended possession, they managed to drain precious time off the clock before punting. The play effectively sealed Kansas City’s third straight victory.

“It wasn’t a lot but with that said, when it comes to quarterbacks, especially this one, they’re going to protect them,” Aikman commented.

### Mahomes Overcomes Rough Start to Power Chiefs’ Second-Half Surge

The night began on a challenging note for Patrick Mahomes. He opened the game with interceptions on Kansas City’s first two drives—one pass slipped through Travis Kelce’s hands and landed in the defender’s arms, while another was a mistimed throw across the middle.

Despite those early miscues, the Chiefs regrouped after halftime with the score tied at 7-7. Kansas City coach Andy Reid described the first half as “weird,” noting the unusual rhythm characterized by turnovers and quick drives from both teams.

Mahomes responded strongly, leading three consecutive touchdown drives in the second half. The star quarterback completed 25 of 34 passes for 299 yards and three touchdowns, offsetting the early mistakes and igniting the Chiefs’ offense.

“Offense, defense, and special teams, I think we’re getting better and better each and every week,” Mahomes said. “Even though we didn’t start the way we wanted offensively, it showed that we can battle through adversity and still continue to play the brand of football that we want to play.”

With the win, the Chiefs improved to 5-3, marking five victories in their last six games after a 0-2 start to the season. Looking ahead, Kansas City will visit Buffalo to face Josh Allen and the Bills, then travel to Denver, followed by a home game against Indianapolis after their bye week.
