A Gary man is facing multiple charges after stabbing another inmate in jail last week. Devonta Horde, 30, has been charged with attempted murder, aggravated battery, battery by means of a deadly weapon, and battery resulting in serious bodily injury.
According to an affidavit, the victim told jail staff that he had “smoked,” or killed, Horde’s brother. Lake County Sheriff’s Department spokeswoman Pam Jones informed a Post-Tribune reporter earlier this week that the victim was in stable condition at a hospital following the attack.
The stabbing occurred around 6 p.m. on October 21, according to Lake County Sheriff Detective Patrick Fotia. The victim had just been taken back to his cell in section 3B when he was attacked. He was later found banging on the cell door, “covered in blood” and “holding his neck.”
A local hospital doctor reported that the victim sustained a deep stab wound on the left side of his face. After conducting a CT scan, medical staff discovered a damaged and bleeding artery in his neck, prompting a transfer to another hospital for further treatment.
Investigators believe Horde used a homemade blue shank, which he pulled from under another inmate’s bed, to carry out the stabbing. The incident was not captured on camera.
The affidavit also notes that four other inmates exhibited “suspicious behavior” related to the case. However, as of Wednesday evening, none of these men have been charged in connection with the attack.
