The New York Giants suffered a devastating blow during Sunday’s 38-20 loss against the Philadelphia Eagles as rookie running back Cam Skattebo sustained a severe ankle injury. Skattebo was taken to a hospital in Philadelphia after exiting the game early. He was diagnosed with a dislocated ankle that required surgery, effectively ending his season.
Kansas City Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce shared his thoughts on the Giants rookie’s injury during the “New Heights” podcast with his elder brother Jason.
“Sending all the love to him,” Kelce said. “Hopefully, he can get back, man. The NFL absolutely loves a motherf**ker like that, just tough as nails. Hopefully, he gets back in tip-top shape. Big Dom Desandro sent over some pizza and cheese sticks. I mean, the guy got a standing ovation as he was getting carted off.
“Nobody wants to see one of the most loved players in the league get hurt like that. And obviously, what that guy’s been doing at football over the past couple of weeks has been pretty f**king fun to watch, so hopefully he gets back healthy and back to running dudes over and being the epitome of a f*cking NFL football player.”
Skattebo has quickly become a fan favorite, along with fellow rookie Jaxson Dart, who was visibly frustrated after Skattebo was carted off the field.
### Injury Worse Than Initially Reported
New reports suggest that Skattebo’s injury is more severe than originally thought. According to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport, the rookie not only sustained a dislocated ankle but also suffered a fibula fracture and a deltoid ligament rupture.
Skattebo underwent surgery on Sunday night to close his wound and was discharged from the hospital the following morning. Dr. Guillem Gonzalez-Lomas, an assistant professor of orthopedic surgery at NYU Grossman School of Medicine, provided insight on the procedure in a conversation with the New York Post.
“The fact that he had surgery Sunday night probably tells us that they felt it was very time sensitive,” Lomas said. “If you were able to get the ankle back in place, sometimes you would let the swelling go down for a week or two before proceeding with the definitive treatment.”
According to reports, Skattebo is expected to rejoin the team during the offseason and could resume football activities by July 2026.
