For the first time in franchise history, the San Antonio Spurs have started the season with a perfect 5-0 record. Victor Wembanyama has been nothing short of stellar, playing at an MVP level to kick off the year.
On October 30th, the Spurs secured a 107-101 victory over the Miami Heat. Wembanyama put up impressive numbers with 27 points, 18 rebounds, six assists, and five blocks. Despite Bam Adebayo looking like the best player on the court with a 31-point double-double, the Heat struggled to penetrate the Spurs’ defense. For much of the game, Miami appeared hesitant to get the ball near the basket—and for good reason. Wembanyama’s defense has been on a whole new level this season, swatting away even the easiest layups.
However, toward the end of the first half, Adebayo unleashed a thunderous dunk over Wembanyama that sent social media into a frenzy.
### Victor Wembanyama Reacts to Getting Dunked On
In basketball, if you’re going to establish yourself in the paint, you’re going to get dunked on—it’s just a fact of life. Wembanyama is the league’s best shot-blocker, but even he can’t stop every attempt. Remarkably, he seemed totally unfazed after the game.
“Getting dunked on is part of the game,” Wembanyama said following the Spurs’ win. “Until I’m getting dunked on more than block shots, I’m going to keep going. But none of us are going to live to see this day.”
In the past, several players have dunked near Wembanyama’s vicinity, and social media accounts have been quick to label those moments as “posters”—even if there was little resistance. But Adebayo’s dunk was emphatic and a legitimate highlight.
It’s possible that if the Spurs had lost the game, Wembanyama’s reaction might have been different. Instead, he ended the night hyping up the crowd and yelling into the stands, showing clearly that a single play didn’t affect his focus.
### San Antonio Spurs Are Title Contenders
Is it too early to call the Spurs title contenders? With a 5-0 start and three wins by double digits or more, it’s hard to argue against it. Wembanyama has been elite—arguably the best player in the world—and he’s doing it without support from injured teammates like Luke Kornet, Kelly Olynyk, and De’Aaron Fox, who has yet to take the floor this season.
Meanwhile, players like Stephon Castle, Devin Vassell, Dylan Harper, and even Keldon Johnson are seamlessly slotting into their roles. There is no ego, only a unified focus on team success.
This year’s Spurs look like the Spurs of the past—disciplined, cohesive, and threatening contenders ready to make a deep playoff run.
