SAN JOSE – San Jose State secured a thrilling 45-38 victory over Hawaii on Saturday night, powered by a career-high 215 receiving yards and two touchdowns from wide receiver Danny Scudero. This win marks the Spartans’ fifth consecutive victory in the Dick Tomey Legacy Game.
Despite trailing 31-14 at halftime, the Rainbow Warriors (6-3) made a strong comeback effort, closing the gap to within one score with just 1:16 left in the game. However, their last-ditch onside kick rolled out of bounds, sealing the victory for San Jose State (3-5).
Both of Scudero’s touchdowns came at critical moments, swinging momentum in favor of the Spartans. The game featured a showcase of the Mountain West’s two best passing offenses.
Hawaii opened the second half with an 8-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Micah Alejado to running back Landon Sims, cutting the Spartans’ lead to 31-21 in the third quarter. On the very next drive, Spartans quarterback Walker Eget connected with Scudero for a 62-yard touchdown pass, extending San Jose State’s advantage.
Alejado responded with a 68-yard touchdown pass to wide receiver Jackson Harris, narrowing the score to 31-28 with 4:07 left in the second quarter. But the Spartans answered quickly as Eget found Scudero again for a 50-yard touchdown, pushing the lead to 38-28.
Later, a key sack by SJSU linebacker Jordan Pollard helped stifle a Hawaii drive, leading to a 24-yard field goal by Matthias Brown and increasing the Spartans’ lead to 31-14 at halftime.
Eget finished the night completing 20 of 40 passes for 458 yards and two touchdowns to Scudero. Impressively, three SJSU wide receivers—Scudero, Leland Smith (113 yards), and Kyri Shoels (109 yards)—all surpassed 100 receiving yards for the second time this season.
On defense, Pollard recorded eight tackles, including two tackles for loss and a crucial sack. Hawaii’s Alejado threw for 367 yards on 31-for-46 passing, with three touchdowns and no interceptions.
In the fourth quarter, Hawaii continued to fight back, closing the gap to 38-35 following a 20-yard touchdown pass from Alejado to Pofele Ashlock Harris with 9:32 remaining. However, the Spartans responded on their next possession as running back Steve Chavez-Soto scored on a 1-yard run to make it 45-35 with 5:37 left in regulation.
Chavez-Soto had a standout performance with three rushing touchdowns. Alongside teammate Lamar Radcliffe, who rushed for 97 yards on 10 carries, the San Jose State rushing duo combined for 150 yards and four touchdowns.
Looking ahead, San Jose State will return home to face Air Force (2-6, 1-4) on Saturday, Nov. 8, with kickoff scheduled for 3 p.m.
