Speaking at a media session on February 29, 2024, after announcing their marriage, Ohtani said, “She is a Japanese woman. I don’t really feel comfortable talking about when I got married exactly, but she’s a normal Japanese woman,” according to the Associated Press.

Ohtani is not the only athlete in the family. Mamiko Tanaka is a former professional basketball player who played for the Japanese team Fujitsu Red Wave in the Women’s Basketball League (WBL). She played forward for four seasons in the league, as reported by ESPN’s Brianna Williams.
Tanaka signed with the Red Wave in 2019, and the team finished the regular season with an impressive 13-3 record. The most successful season during Tanaka’s tenure came in 2021, when the Red Wave finished the regular season 17-3, including an outstanding 11-1 record at home, securing a postseason berth.
The team won both the quarterfinal and semifinal rounds but was swept in the final. During that season, Tanaka shot 47.7% from the field and 69.9% from the free throw line across 28 games.
