### After Days of Uncertainty, SNAP Funding Partially Resumes
Following several days of uncertainty, the Trump administration has announced it will resume funding for the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), but only for part of the month.
### What’s Happening?
Funding for SNAP is expected to restart soon after the Trump administration confirmed on Monday that it would comply with a federal judge’s order to spend about $5.5 billion in contingency funds. These contingency funds act as emergency cash reserves that keep the program operational during crises.
SNAP funding had lapsed over the weekend due to the ongoing government shutdown, disrupting vital food assistance for nearly 42 million Americans — many of whom are children. While benefits should begin flowing again shortly, the interruption has left SNAP recipients grappling with lost aid and uncertainty about when support will fully resume.
### What’s the Context?
This interruption in SNAP funding might have been avoidable. Up until early October, the Department of Agriculture (USDA) maintained a publicly available plan outlining how contingency funds would be used to maintain benefit payments. That plan has since been removed from the USDA website and replaced with a message stating, “The well has run dry,” which blamed congressional Democrats for the situation.
### What’s Next for SNAP?
The contingency funds now being used will cover roughly half of November’s benefits before payments potentially lapse once again. If the government shutdown continues beyond that, SNAP assistance risks coming to a complete halt.
This looming funding cliff is partly due to the Trump administration’s refusal to explore alternative sources to keep SNAP funded past mid-November. Last week, a separate federal judge in Boston suggested using tariff revenue as a possible funding source, but the administration has said it does not plan to tap into those funds.
### What’s the Big Picture?
As the government shutdown drags on, the Trump administration has taken extraordinary steps to maintain funding for certain priorities, such as immigration enforcement and military paychecks. However, programs like food assistance are only funded when compelled by court orders—and then, reluctantly.
