Data Corner: how governments are supporting research security

Untitled20design28229_0

On October 28, Research Commissioner Ekaterina Zaharieva promised to embed research security into EU law. This commitment comes at a time when numerous policy initiatives are already in place, providing a strong foundation to build upon.

According to the latest STIP Compass—a joint project by the European Commission and the OECD that monitors science, technology, and innovation policies—there are currently 250 research security policies implemented by governments and research funders across 41 countries.

Research security policies aim to prevent foreign interference, manage risks, and ensure trust in science. These policies often form part of, and sometimes overlap with, broader research integrity frameworks. Notably, research integrity policies are tracked separately by the STIP Compass.

With this groundwork, the EU is poised to strengthen the regulatory framework surrounding research security, fostering a safer and more reliable scientific environment.
