Camila Mendes Shares Positive Early Take on Masters of the Universe Movie’s Tone
Fans of Eternia have received a fairly promising tone update from one of the film’s key stars. In a recent interview with Screen Rant, Camila Mendes expressed her pleasant surprise at the *Masters of the Universe* script, highlighting its perfect balance of humor and heart.
“I think one of the things I admire most about the film, and that I was so pleasantly surprised by when I read the script, is that it had the perfect balance of comedy and heart,” Mendes explained. “It wasn’t a movie that was completely making fun of itself the whole time, but it has a good sense of humor. I’m really, really proud of what we did. I just have a feeling about this one. I could be completely wrong, but I think it’s very special.”
Everything We Know About Masters of the Universe
*Masters of the Universe* stars Nicholas Galitzine as Prince Adam and his iconic alter ego, He-Man. The film is directed by Travis Knight, with a script penned by Chris Butler. The story follows Adam, who was separated from the Power Sword as a child and lived on Earth. Years later, he reclaims the sword and returns to Eternia to face off against Skeletor nearly two decades afterward.
Principal photography wrapped in June 2025, and the movie is currently slated for a June 5, 2026 theatrical release from Amazon MGM Studios.
In addition to Galitzine and Mendes, the cast features Jared Leto as Skeletor, Alison Brie as Evil-Lyn, Idris Elba as Man-At-Arms, and Morena Baccarin as the Sorceress. Other notable cast members include Jóhannes Haukur Jóhannesson as Fisto, James Purefoy as King Randor, Charlotte Riley as Queen Marlena, and Kristen Wiig lending her voice to Roboto.
A Rich Legacy
For those new to the saga, *Masters of the Universe* has a rich history dating back to its origins as a Mattel toy line in 1982. The brand skyrocketed in popularity with Filmation’s 1983 animated series, which helped define Eternia’s mythology for a generation.
The franchise expanded into *She-Ra* and the 1985 feature film *Secret of the Sword*, further broadening its universe. A cult-favorite live-action film starring Dolph Lundgren followed in 1987, maintaining the brand’s relevance. Later updates included a 2002 animated series and Netflix’s 2021 continuation, which introduced the story to a new generation.
Looking Ahead
With Mendes praising the film’s tone, the extensive lore backing the story, and Travis Knight’s reputation for character-driven adventure, the new *Masters of the Universe* movie carries extra hype as it heads toward its colorful quest on the big screen.
