President Donald Trump reportedly wants the Washington Commanders’ new stadium to be named “Trump Stadium”—and the White House isn’t denying the possibility!
Here’s the latest: An ESPN report dropped Saturday, claiming that Trump, referred to as “47,” has expressed interest in naming the Commanders’ soon-to-be-opened $3.7 billion stadium after himself. When asked about it, White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt commented that “Trump Stadium” would be a “beautiful” name for the venue, stating, “It was President Trump who made the rebuilding of the new stadium possible.”
It remains unclear exactly what Leavitt meant by Trump making the rebuilding possible. Back in July, Trump threatened to block construction of the new stadium if the Washington Commanders did not revert to their former “Redskins” nickname.
According to ESPN, the Commanders cannot simply name the stadium on their own. The District of Columbia Council is leasing the stadium to the team, while the National Park Service manages the land. The new stadium is set to be built on the site where RFK Stadium—named after Robert F. Kennedy—still stands, which could be where Trump got the idea for the naming.
The Commanders moved out of RFK Stadium in 2019. Traditionally, teams seek a wealthy corporate sponsor willing to pay millions for naming rights. However, per ESPN, Trump isn’t looking to pay for those rights—or have a sponsor pay on his behalf. Instead, he reportedly wants the team to honor him with the naming for free.
Whether “Trump Stadium” will become a reality remains to be seen, given all the parties involved and the potential for a lucrative corporate deal. Stay tuned for updates on this developing story!
