Miami Dolphins quarterback Tua Tagovailoa faced criticism online following the opening series against the Buffalo Bills on Sunday. The Dolphins used a timeout before their first snap, and moments later, Tagovailoa threw an interception at Hard Rock Stadium, sparking frustration among fans.
On social media platform X, users expressed their disappointment with the turnover. One fan wrote, “Tua Turndaballova strikes again.” Another added, “Tua, I appreciate your INT donation.” Concerns about the team’s future were also voiced, with one fan commenting, “Dolphins are cooked if they can’t figure out how to get out of that terrible contract.”
More reactions poured in: “Dolphins already used a timeout and threw an INT one minute into the game,” one fan noted. Another remarked, “Tua again with his favourite play,” while a different user tweeted, “People will still try and tell you Tua is a good QB.”
After winning the coin toss, Miami opted to take the ball first but immediately struggled. A false start penalty pushed the offense back before they ran their first play. The Dolphins were then forced to use a timeout with the clock still set at 15:00 in the first quarter.
Facing third-and-11, Tagovailoa attempted a deep throw into tight coverage. Buffalo safety Cole Bishop made the interception with 13:33 remaining, marking Tagovailoa’s 12th interception of the season—the second most in the league behind Las Vegas Raiders quarterback Geno Smith.
Despite the early turnover, Buffalo failed to capitalize, going three-and-out before punting back to Miami. The Dolphins regrouped and executed a composed, clock-consuming drive, covering 92 yards over 12 plays. Tagovailoa finished the drive with a short touchdown pass to Malik Washington, giving Miami a 7-0 lead with 4:49 left in the first quarter.
The offense converted only one third down during the drive, thanks to a 6-yard run by Alec Ingold.
Sunday’s matchup held significant postseason implications. The Bills came in riding a seven-game winning streak over the Dolphins, boasting a 6-2 record compared to Miami’s 2-7. Buffalo quarterback Josh Allen continued his dominance against Tagovailoa, improving to 9-1 all-time. Miami has not beaten Buffalo since September 2022.
