The Senate passed a bill Monday night to end the federal government shutdown, which reached its 41st day Monday, marking the longest shutdown in history by nearly a week.
**How Has The Government Shutdown Impacted Food Stamps?**
The Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), which funds food stamps, was halted at the start of the month. The Agriculture Department stated on its website that “the well has run dry,” indicating that funds were no longer available to continue benefits.
In response, a flurry of lawsuits were filed against the Trump administration demanding the payment of benefits. These legal actions resulted in court orders allowing some states, including California and New York, to issue full SNAP benefits for November.
However, the Trump administration has urged the Supreme Court to block the continuation of full benefits, seeking to prevent further payments from being made during the shutdown.
