Michael Phelps’ wife, Nicole Johnson, recently expressed her gratitude towards the friends and family who provided unwavering support to both her and the former swimmer during their difficult times.
Phelps and Johnson married after years of dating. The couple first met during the 2007 ESPY Awards, where Johnson worked as a model escorting athletes on the red carpet. They began dating on and off in 2009 but went their separate ways in 2011. However, the couple rekindled their relationship in 2014 and got engaged in February 2015.
In June 2016, following the birth of their eldest son, Boomer, Phelps and Johnson exchanged vows in a private ceremony held in Cabo San Lucas, Mexico. Today, Johnson and Phelps enjoy a joyful and happy life together.
Recently, the former model reshared a heartfelt message that emphasized the importance of having people who support and protect you, even when you are not around. The quote read:
“Shoutout to the people who protect you even when you are not around. The ones who squash any false rumours and reject conversations that are set to belittle you. The ones who pray for you and shield your back rather than pierce it.”
Reflecting on her own experiences, Johnson revealed that she and Phelps have faced similar situations and expressed their gratitude for those who stood by them. She wrote, “I’m thankful for those who do this. A few weeks ago, @m_phelps00 & I felt this loud and clear. We are so grateful for those people.”
Michael Phelps and Nicole Johnson share four sons: Boomer, Beckett Richard Phelps, Maverick Nicholas Phelps, and Nico Michael Phelps.
Michael Phelps has also been open about how Nicole Johnson supported him during his mental health struggles. Throughout his legendary swimming career, especially after participating in the Olympic Games, Phelps has faced mental health setbacks.
In a 2021 interview with Today.com, Phelps spoke about his wife’s role during those challenging times. He said, “Nicole loves me and wants to help. She wants me to get better. But she’s also struggling herself. She needs that support as well. I know it’s hard for her. I feel like Nicole and I are closer than ever.”
Phelps experienced post-Olympics depression following the 2004, 2008, and 2012 Olympic Games, making the support from his wife all the more significant in his journey toward recovery and well-being.
