Two years ago, Jackson stepped down as president of the Rainbow PUSH Coalition, the Chicago-based organization he founded that fights for progressive social change. Although he now serves in an advisory role, he continues to participate in public events.

Jackson was by Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s side before King was assassinated. For over half a century, he has been a prominent voice on civil rights issues locally, nationally, and internationally.

Notably, Jackson was the first African American to run for president, campaigning in both 1984 and 1988.
