**Keir Starmer Allies Warn Labour Rebels: Ousting PM Could Trigger General Election**
*Published on The Daily Mail, 13 November 2025 | By Jason Groves*
Allies of Prime Minister Keir Starmer have cautioned Labour plotters that any move to oust him could result in a general election.
As Westminster was abuzz with rumours of a leadership challenge, Starmer’s supporters claimed that any new party leader would require a “mandate” from voters before taking office. This warning came after a turbulent day in Downing Street, where an attempt to sideline potential rival Wes Streeting reportedly backfired.
**Labour’s Polling Troubles**
With Labour currently polling at less than 20 percent, a snap election could lead to the loss of hundreds of seats. While there is no legal requirement for a new Prime Minister to call an election, one insider noted:
*“In the modern age, you need your own mandate. We saw under the Tories, and even with Gordon [Brown], that the public hates the idea of political parties stitching up the choice of a new PM without their say. Anyone thinking of moving against Keir should consider that very carefully.”*
**Mounting Criticism from Opponents**
Cabinet Minister Kemi Badenoch said the government had “descended into civil war,” while Reform UK leader Nigel Farage told the Daily Mail:
*“This is a government that is all at sea, without a rudder. The sooner we have an election, the better it will be for the country. Not that I’m holding my breath.”*
**Calls for Accountability**
Sir Keir has faced growing pressure to sack his controversial chief of staff, Morgan McSweeney, who is widely blamed for orchestrating damaging overnight briefings. These briefings accused Wes Streeting of plotting a coup and branded Labour MPs “feral.” One of McSweeney’s allies admitted he was “100 percent behind” the briefing, adding, “He’s toast.”
Wes Streeting has called for those responsible for the negative briefings to be removed and urged Starmer to address the “toxic culture” in Downing Street.
