Rajanah Reed scored 15 minutes into the first half to help the University of Central Florida (UCF) secure a 2-0 victory over the University of Maine in the first round of the NCAA Division I women’s soccer tournament on Friday in Orlando, Florida.

The Black Bears suffered a first-round tournament exit for the third consecutive season, finishing their year with a record of 6-8-4. Central Florida, meanwhile, improved to 12-3-5 and will advance to face No. 2 seed Duke in the second round. The Blue Devils earned their spot by defeating Elon 3-0 on Friday.

Maine had entered the tournament after a hard-fought win against Vermont in the America East Conference championship game, prevailing 3-2 in regulation and 4-3 in penalty kicks.

In addition to Reed’s early goal, Hannah Boughton added a second-half goal for Central Florida. On the defensive end, Maine’s Elena Barenburg made three saves, while UCF goalkeeper Genesis Perez Watson recorded two saves to secure the shutout.
