MONROE, La. (AP) — Bishop Davenport and Kentrel Bullock both had two short touchdown runs as South Alabama overcame a 14-point deficit to rally for a 26-14 victory over UL Monroe on Saturday.
UL Monroe got off to a strong start when Jake Godfrey returned a punt 18 yards to South Alabama’s 29-yard line following a three-and-out on the game’s opening drive. On the very next play, Braylon McReynolds ran for a touchdown, giving the Warhawks an early lead.
South Alabama quickly responded thanks to a key defensive play. Andre Mack forced a fumble from Davenport after a short run, and Noah Flemmings scooped up the ball, racing 42 yards for a score, putting UL Monroe ahead 14-0 after the first quarter.
The Lions then took control for the remainder of the game. Bullock capped a nine-play drive with a 1-yard touchdown run, cutting the deficit to 14-7 — the only score in the second quarter.
South Alabama’s first possession of the third quarter resulted in a 69-yard drive, ending with Davenport’s 1-yard touchdown run to tie the game at 14-all. Davenport later gave the Lions their first lead of the game with a 3-yard touchdown run with five minutes left in the quarter, making it 20-14 after the missed extra point.
