**S S Rajamouli Announces ‘Varanasi’ as the First Indian Film Filmed for IMAX at Grand Globetrotter Event**
Hyderabad witnessed a star-studded gathering as celebrated filmmaker S S Rajamouli, along with M M Keeravani, actors Mahesh Babu, Priyanka Chopra, Prithviraj Sukumaran, and others, attended the grand Globetrotter event. The highlight of the evening was Rajamouli’s exciting announcement about his upcoming film *Varanasi*, which is set to be the first Indian film ever to be filmed in IMAX.
Breaking new ground in Indian cinema, Rajamouli took to the stage to clarify a common misconception about films released in IMAX screens. “Certain films are just ‘blown up’ to fit IMAX screens, but that is not true IMAX,” he explained. He further elaborated that his earlier films like *Baahubali* and *RRR* (2022) were made in the 1:1.9 aspect ratio format.
Standing before the massive 100 feet by 130 feet screen — the largest ever at the venue — Rajamouli illustrated the difference between these formats with visuals spanning the entire screen. He proudly declared, “Our film, *Varanasi*, will be screened full screen. It is filmed for IMAX!”
Rajamouli emphasized, “I’m so proud to say that we are introducing new technology to Telugu cinema — a premium large-scale format. *Varanasi* is filmed for IMAX.” His announcement sent the crowd into a frenzy, eager to witness this technological leap.
Eager to showcase the film’s trailer, Rajamouli asked his team, “Can I have the trailer in full-screen format?” However, technical glitches delayed the screening. Rajamouli apologized, sharing that powering the massive screen had required 45 generators. After a short wait, the announcement video finally played in all its glory, receiving a roaring response from the eager audience.
Earlier that day, actor Prithviraj Sukumaran also spoke about how he landed his role in *Varanasi*. He recalled Rajamouli’s famous narration, which his friend Prabhas had often praised. “Just five minutes into the narration, I was blown away. For the rest of the three hours, I listened not as an actor receiving a pitch but like a little boy holding the next edition of his favorite comic book! The scale, the vision, the ambition — it is India’s greatest contemporary filmmaking, pushing boundaries to never-before-seen territory,” Prithviraj remarked.
The event also saw moments of warmth and camaraderie. Priyanka Chopra was seen cutely joining Mahesh Babu’s fans in chanting “Babu, Babu.” She expressed gratitude towards his family, saying, “Namrata Shirodkar, Sitara Ghattamaneni made me feel that Hyderabad is home.”
