Alex Rodriguez’s new HBO docuseries, *Alex vs. A-Rod*, offers fans an intimate look into some of the most intricate and personal details of his life. In a revealing segment from the second episode, released on Thursday, Rodriguez and his ex-wife Cynthia Scurtis opened up about rumors involving him and pop star Madonna during their marriage.
Scurtis acknowledged that the constant media attention on Rodriguez, especially in the New York tabloids, significantly impacted their relationship. Without naming names, she referred to an April 2008 incident as the “final nail in the coffin.”
“We were together for about a year, and I got pregnant with Ella. Then, when Ella was first born [in April 2008], a very similar scenario happened, and at that point, we got divorced,” Scurtis said.
These reports were the second major headlines about Rodriguez’s alleged extramarital affairs at the time. The previous year, in 2007, the Yankees infielder was spotted with a woman in Toronto. Cynthia and Rodriguez finalized their divorce in 2008, with her citing his multiple affairs as a primary reason for their separation.
“I knew that he had his own demons, and I was hoping he would get help,” she shared. “And I was hoping that it could end differently than it did. He was really upset [about the divorce], so that affected me, but at the same time, I think I felt a sense of freedom.”
Alex Rodriguez also addressed the media scrutiny surrounding his personal life during his Yankees tenure. He admitted that the intense speculation and rumors had an effect on his marriage.
“First, I’ll say you can’t believe everything you read,” Rodriguez said in the docuseries. “Some things are underplayed in the media and some things are overplayed, and this is probably somewhere in the middle.
“It was not like we were unhappy, but we were growing apart romantically. I don’t know. Marriage is challenging.”
Since the divorce, Rodriguez’s dating life has remained a topic of public interest. He is currently dating fitness instructor Jaclyn Cordeiro.
The docuseries *Alex vs. A-Rod* is set to air its series finale this Thursday on HBO.
