Man charged in death of wife after failed suicide attempt

Lake Charles Police have arrested a man wanted in the fatal shooting of his wife in October. Deputy Chief Kevin Kirkum said officers responded to a call for emergency assistance just before 3: 30 a. m. Oct. 25 in the 3800 block of Texas Street. “When officers entered the residence, they located 47-year-old Laura Fontenot who was found deceased with a gun shot wound, and Brett Fontenot who was injured from a gunshot wound,” Kirkum said. Kirkum said the couple had gotten into an argument earlier that night at another location and when they made it back home, Brett Fontenot shot his wife then turned the weapon on himself in an attempt to take his life. “Since the night of the incident, Brett Fontenot has been in a Baton Rouge hospital recovering from his injuries,” Kirkum said. On Monday, Lake Charles Police went to Baton Rouge and executed an arrest warrant on him for second-degree murder and brought him back to Lake Charles. He Fontenot has been booked into the Calcasieu CorrectionalCenter and his bond has been set at $1. 5 million. This is an ongoing investigation and the Police Department is urging anyone with information about this incident to call the Lake Charles Police Department or anonymously leave a tip on Lake Charles PD app.
