CHICAGO — A music mash-up that you may not expect is happening at the Lyric Opera of Chicago: a collaboration of classical musicians, along with the Smashing Pumpkins’ Billy Corgan. With 30 million albums sold worldwide, Smashing Pumpkins remains one of the most critically acclaimed and commercially successful bands of the 1990s, contributing greatly to the explosion of alternative rock. In 1995, Corgan and the Pumpkins’ double album “Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness” debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard charts. Now, 30 years later, Corgan is collaborating with Lyric Opera to recreate the album with a full chorus and orchestra.
