The 3A D2 No. 1 ranked Tidehaven Tigers (11-0, 6-0) were 62-7 winners last Thursday over Comfort in the bi-district round of the UIL Texas Football State Playoffs. Tidehaven senior quarterback Kale Russell needed just 10 completions on 14 attempts to total 249 passing yards and added two passing scores in the victory. In the process, Russell achieved a quarterback rating of 153. 3. The highest possible rating a quarterback can reach is 158. 3. By comparison, Comfort managed just 21 yards passing against Tidehaven. Russell also added a team high 119 rushing yards on eight carries with three touchdowns on the ground. “Our quarterback is as accurate as can be. He’s never lost a district game since the seventh grade on, and he’s been my starting quarterback since he was a freshman. Kale has led us to the state championship game and the state semifinals. Led by him, it’s just a massive combination for people to deal with,” Tidehaven head coach Lucio said earlier this season. Sophomore halfback Julian Stockton also had an impactful performance against Comfort. Stockton carried the ball just nine times but made the most of those opportunities with 114 yards and two touchdowns. As a team, Tidehaven totaled 326 yards rushing in the game. This Friday, the Tigers will travel to Warrior Stadium in Corpus Christi and take on a Stockdale Brahmas team that is 9-2 on the year and 6-1 within District 15. Stockdale placed second to Poth in their district and is currently on a four-game winning streak. Stockdale defeated Santa Rosa 56-13 in the bi-district round last week. The Brahmas last lost a game on Oct. 17 at Poth, 27-20. Stockdale’s offense boasts a pair of 1, 000-yard rushers. Junior quarterback Coy Gann has rushed for 1, 702 yards on 183 carries and scored 30 touchdowns this year. Senior halfback Ricky Ayala has picked up 1, 248 yards on 182 carries and scored 12 times on the ground. In last week’s win, Stockdale’s duo combined for 352 rushing yards and six rushing scores. Coach Lucio believes pushing tempo with Tidehaven’s explosive aerial can help to neutralize Stockdale’s potent rushing game. “They’re a solid team. You don’t win nine games without being good. Our offense needs to keep pushing the pace and keep the pressure on them to keep up with us. The more we can do that, the better I like our chances,” coach Lucio said.
