City annexes property for proposed hotel

The-Moultrie-Observer

MOULTRIE The city of Moultrie now has two hotel projects under way. Moultrie Lodging Development LLC asked the Moultrie City Council Tuesday to annex property on Highway 37 East with the intent to use it to build a hotel. The council agreed. Councilman Daniel Dunn recused himself, but otherwise the vote was unanimous. The property located where R. W. Bryant Road meets the highway, between Publix and Home Depot will be zoned C3 (Commercial District). Few details of the project were discussed at Tuesday’s meeting, but City Manager Peter Dillard said afterward that hotels of the size proposed usually employ about 30 people. The project joins another hotel project that was proposed in July. In that project, Thomasville investors affiliated with the Marriott chain hope to build a hotel in downtown Moultrie, across First Street Northeast from the Municipal Building. After Tuesday’s meeting, Dillard said the investment banking firm and architectural firm are reviewing and finalizing details on the downtown hotel project. Also at Tuesday’s meeting, the council annexed land east of 348 Industrial Drive and zoned it M1 (Light and Service Industrial). Ferrell Scruggs of Cat Creek Development, which requested the annexation, said the company plans to build a building there that it would rent to the adjacent Pratt Industries. Pratt would use the space to assemble cardboard boxes, he said, such as the ones used to transport fruits and vegetables. Scruggs said he hoped to break ground in February or March, but Dillard said afterward that the deal has not been finalized. Dillard said Pratt and the Moultrie-Colquitt County Development Authority are expected to release more details when plans are complete.
