VERMILLION, S. D. The University of South Dakota women’s basketball team extended its winning streak to six games to begin the season after defeating Valparaiso 85-44 on Friday night at the Sanford Coyote Sports Center. The Coyotes’ 6-0 record marks the best start since going 9-0 to begin the 2002-03 season. USD came out of the gates on fire, starting the game with a 23-5 run and an 18-point lead at the end of the first quarter and never looked back. Four Coyotes finished with 11 or more points, led by Patience Williams and Elise Turrubiates with 13 each and both had a double-double, as Williams tallied 16 rebounds and Turrubiates added 10. Angelina Robles and Molly Joyce each provided 11 points, as Robles offered five assists and four rebounds. Josie Hill had eight points off the bench and three rebounds in 13 minutes played, as Jenna Hopp had seven points, four assists and three rebounds. The Coyote defense held strong against the Beacons, limiting their offense to only 18 points in the first half and 26. 2% from the floor on the game and 9. 2% from 3-point range. USD had 22 second-chance points, 54 points in the paint, 19 points off Valparaiso’s 19 turnovers and the bench provided 35 points. The Beacons dropped to 0-5 on the season with the loss, with a game-high 16 points from Fiona Connolly. USD will be back at home to face Arkansas-Pine Bluff in a non-conference bout at 7 p. m. on Nov. 25 at the Sanford Coyote Sports Center.
