The Indiana man believed to be the killer in a decades’ old murder case is back in Pontiac where he was arraigned Tuesday and remanded to the Oakland County Jail with bond set at $2 million cash or surety. Jack Anthony Young, 45, faces charges of felony murder and felony firearm for the April 30, 1998 fatal shooting of Charles Barnett. According to the Oakland County Sheriff’s Office, Barnett was killed when he walked into his Pontiac home on Corwin Street and surprised a burglar who investigators believe was Young. Barnett was 73 years old, Young was 18. Despite an investigation following the slaying, the case lay dormant with no suspects. But in 2020, Sgt. Todd Hunt of the Oakland County Sheriff’s Office and retired lieutenant Steve Troy took another look and, after a thorough review of the evidence, recently linked Young to the slaying, the sheriff’s office said. It’s also alleged that Young stole Barnett’s car and fled after the shooting, then crashed it a short time later. Police investigating the crash traced the car back to Barnett’s address and discovered the body, the sheriff’s office said. “We never give up on our pursuit of justice for the victims, the families and the community,” Sheriff Michael Bouchard stated in a news release. “I’m proud of the constant review of cold cases that our team does. In this case, we have an opportunity to hold the accused perpetrator accountable after all these years.” Young was living in Mishawaka, Indiana when the Great Lakes Regional Fugitive Task Force arrested him on Nov. 17. He waived extradition and was brought back to Pontiac this week, the sheriff’s office said. His next appearance in 50th District Court is pending.
