England Moves Closer to Launching Tourist Taxes

A trip to England could be more expensive in the coming months. English mayors will be granted the power to tax overnight stays in their respective towns and cities, according to a Tuesday news release from the government. The announcement follows a similar push for more tourist taxes in other parts of the United Kingdom. The new tax would apply to stays at hotels, short-term rentals, bed and breakfasts, and guesthouses, according to a government statement. Certain accommodations, including homeless shelters, would be exempt. The annual budget from finance minister Rachel Reeves, released Wednesday, said the government was “consulting on the design of the levy” and would consider allowing other local leaders the power to launch tourist taxes.
