Shack Chat: Which Nintendo Game Franchise Do You Want to Get 120 FPS Performance Next?
Metroid Prime 4: Beyond breaks new ground for Nintendo, offering Performance and Quality modes with support for up to 120 FPS (frames per second) gameplay. It’s quite impressive and has us wondering what Nintendo games could get these features next. Here’s what some of our team members think.
Star Fox
Ozzie Mejia, Senior Dogfighter
Man, poor Star Fox, just constantly getting the shaft from Nintendo. Every game under the sun got a release on Nintendo Switch, but there was no (official) Star Fox game. Heck, I played Starlink: Battle for Atlas just to get a taste of Fox and company.
With that said, a 120 FPS Star Fox game would be incredible. Imagine taking advantage of the openness of space and allowing for breakneck speed—whether it’s trying to outfly an obstacle or outmaneuver Fox’s Star Wolf rivals. It’ll even make up for the swing-and-a-miss that was Star Fox Zero.
Xenoblade Chronicles X
TJ Denzer, Big Fan of Scary Alien Worlds
When Nintendo was touting all the games it was about to upgrade for the Nintendo Switch 2, I was highly surprised not to find Xenoblade Chronicles X: Definitive Edition on the list. That game looked ripe for a Nintendo Switch 2 upgrade.
I didn’t expect crazy changes, but it seemed like Xenoblade Chronicles X at least deserved an upscale and a 60 FPS mode. The game is already extremely beautiful, especially considering it’s an upgrade of a Wii U title, but it’s still ripe for just a little extra nudge towards even greater quality on Switch 2.
If Nintendo ever goes for it, I’ll just have to make another character—and I most certainly would.
F-Zero
Asif Khan, Once Again Asking Nintendo to Make a New F-Zero Game
Yes, I sound like a broken record, but Nintendo should use the F-Zero franchise as a vehicle to showcase the power of the Nintendo Switch 2. 120 FPS gameplay shines in a racing game environment, and F-Zero pilots operate at extremely high speeds.
Following the success of F-Zero 99, it’s finally time for the best Nintendo racing IP to shine once more. It’s time for F-Zero to return in 4K 60 FPS with a 1080p 120 FPS option.
Just like F-Zero X showcased 60 FPS gameplay back on the N64, the franchise can be a highlight of the Switch 2 generation’s 120 FPS capabilities. Use the boost power, Nintendo!
Pokemon
Donovan Erskine, Pokemon Master
Pokemon Legends: Arceus launched supporting 60 FPS gameplay on the Switch 2 and it’s beautiful. But what if we doubled it?
Legends: Arceus proved that high performance can make up for a lot of visual shortcomings. Having a game running at 120 FPS would be incredibly crisp. It would make the 1,000+ existing Pokemon feel “new” again and would be an excellent way to make the Generation 10 games feel like a true generational leap.
Too Many to Choose From!
Steve Tyminski, Gotta Run Fast!
Which Nintendo game franchise do I want to get 120 FPS performance next? I would love to see Mario Kart running at 120 FPS. It would really show how fast the game could be.
I would also love to see a Legend of Zelda game running at 120 FPS. The series is always gorgeous, and running it at that speed could really show off its visual beauty.
Additionally, I think boosting Pokemon games to 120 FPS would help since recent Pokemon titles haven’t run as smoothly as they should. Setting the bar higher at 120 FPS could smooth out these early issues.
Finally, just for fun, if Rad Racer got a new game, it should definitely run at 120 FPS, right? If we got a new Snow Brothers game, then maybe we could get a new Rad Racer too.
Those are the Nintendo games we’d most like to see get the 120 FPS treatment. What say you? Let us know in the Chatty!
