After a few days off for the holidays, high school hockey teams returned to the ice Friday with several standout performances. The Lynnfield, Peabody-Saugus-Swampscott, and St. John’s Prep boys all came away victorious, while Marblehead and the Lynn Jets faced tough losses.
In the Michael Giordano ’84 Christmas Classic, Lynnfield secured a 2-0 win over Boston Latin at Murphy Rink in South Boston. Netminder Angelo Covino stole the show with an impressive 28 saves. Goals were scored by Lucas Deraps and Nick Kelter, while Jackson McShane and Johnny Powers contributed assists. The Pioneers (2-1-1) will next face Hanover—who defeated Winthrop in the first round—in the championship game on Saturday. Puck-drop is scheduled for 4 p.m.
Meanwhile, in the Lynn Christmas Tournament at Connery Rink, host team Lynn Jets (1-2) fell 5-2 to Peabody-Saugus-Swampscott. Lynn trailed 4-0 after the first period but mounted a spirited comeback. Goals for the Jets came from Joseph Plourde and Kyle Furlong, with Denim Dembro and Aaron Cook assisting. Nicholas DeNino made 27 saves in goal. Lynn will take on Latin Academy in the consolation game on Saturday at 4 p.m.
St. John’s Prep, showcasing their custom Pete Frates Winter Classic uniforms, dominated Boston College High at Essex Sports Center in Middleton with a 7-0 victory. The Prep (2-0-1) punched their ticket to Saturday’s championship game against Pope Francis, set for 5 p.m. The scoring was well-distributed, featuring goals from Brandon Ward, JR Goldstein, Luke Horenstein, Owen Hanson, Anthony Petruccelli (who scored twice), and Chase Brown.
Over at O’Maley/Talbot Rink in Gloucester, Marblehead (0-4) struggled against Medfield (3-1), falling 5-0 in the opening round of the Cape Ann Savings Bank Holiday Hockey Tournament. The Headers are aiming for a consolation victory in their next game on Saturday at 5 p.m.
With championship and consolation games scheduled for the weekend, the local high school hockey scene is heating up as teams aim to finish the holiday tournaments strong.
