Mike Vrabel is reportedly leaning on the experience of offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels as he prepares for his first Super Bowl as a head coach. While Vrabel knows what it’s like to play in a Super Bowl, he sought guidance from some notable figures ahead of coaching in Super Bowl LX against the Seahawks.
According to The Athletic’s Dianna Russini, the Patriots’ head coach communicated with both Bill Belichick and Chiefs’ head coach Andy Reid to tap into their vast Super Bowl experience. “Vrabel reached out to Belichick and fellow Super Bowl-winning coach Andy Reid, tapping into their experience as he gets ready for the big game,” Russini reported.
In addition to reaching out to these legendary coaches, Vrabel has also relied on Patriots’ offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels. Heading into his 10th Super Bowl, McDaniels brings a wealth of postseason experience. “New England’s first-year leader also has an experienced advisor on staff,” Russini noted. “Vrabel has been asking McDaniels for advice on preparations and other things to consider Sunday.”
One possible piece of advice from Belichick and Reid was evident during Friday’s practice at Stanford Stadium. The Patriots simulated the halftime break by playing some of Bad Bunny’s music as the team went into the locker room for 14 minutes. This strategy has been used by both Belichick’s and Reid’s teams during their Super Bowl runs.
Belichick employed this approach multiple times during his Super Bowl appearances with the Patriots, with players crediting the halftime routine for their success. Similarly, in the Chiefs’ Super Bowl LVII victory over the Eagles, Patrick Mahomes and teammates highlighted the importance of the halftime break and how it helped fuel their comeback.
To put their experience in perspective, Belichick has won six Super Bowls as the Patriots’ head coach, while Reid has captured three titles in five appearances leading the Chiefs. McDaniels, meanwhile, has six Super Bowl wins to his name as an assistant with the Patriots, including three as their offensive coordinator.
As for Vrabel, he brings his own impressive Super Bowl pedigree, having won three Super Bowls as a player in four trips. Known for making big plays on the grand stage, Vrabel recorded a touchdown reception in two of his Patriots’ Super Bowl wins and tallied two sacks in their Super Bowl XXXVIII victory.
Now in his first year as a head coach, Vrabel has quickly revitalized the Patriots. He led the team to a 14-win season following back-to-back four-win campaigns, earning him Coach of the Year honors on Thursday. However, history suggests that Coach of the Year recipients have had limited success winning the Super Bowl. Belichick was the last coach to win both accolades in the same season, achieving the feat in 2003.
As Vrabel prepares for Super Bowl LX, he continues to draw on the knowledge of some of the most successful coaches in NFL history, supported by a seasoned staff and his own championship experience as a player.
