India secured a thrilling five-wicket victory over Pakistan in the tense final of the Asia Cup, held at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium. This marked their third encounter against the rivals in the tournament, and the win earned India their ninth Asia Cup title.
The match was marred by ongoing tensions, as both teams once again refused to shake hands, continuing the pattern seen in their two earlier fractious meetings. Adding to the controversy, the Indian players did not take part in the trophy presentation. Reports suggested that they were reluctant to receive the trophy from Mohsin Naqvi, the Asian Cricket Council president and Pakistan Cricket Board chairman.
Pakistan was sent in to bat first and started well. Sahibzada Farhan contributed a solid 57 runs, while Fakhar Zaman added 46, combining for an impressive opening partnership of 84 runs. Pakistan looked strong at 113-1 with 44 balls still remaining in their innings.
However, what followed was a dramatic collapse that turned the tide in India’s favor. Left-arm spinner Kuldeep Yadav played a crucial role, taking four wickets for just 30 runs. Capitalizing on some poor shots by the Pakistani batsmen, India dismissed the remaining nine players for only 33 runs. Pakistan was bowled out for a modest total of 146 with five deliveries still to spare.
India’s disciplined bowling and composure with the bat ultimately secured their victory and ensured they retained the Asia Cup, much to the delight of their fans.
