In a significant leadership change, Shubman Gill has been appointed the new captain of the Indian ODI team, taking over from Rohit Sharma ahead of the upcoming three-match ODI series in Australia. This marks Gill’s first tenure as an ODI captain, having previously led the Indian Test team and captained in five T20 International matches.
### Squad Update: Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli Included
Despite being replaced as captain, Rohit Sharma remains part of the ODI squad, alongside stalwart batter Virat Kohli. Both players were last seen representing India in the 2025 Champions Trophy. Additionally, Shreyas Iyer has been named the vice-captain for the series against Australia, adding further experience to the leadership group.
### Leadership Transition: Gill’s Captaincy Experience and ODI Stats
At just 26 years old, Gill is relatively new to captaincy in the 50-over format. He has captained only six List-A matches so far, maintaining an impressive win-loss ratio of 5:1. His recent success as India’s Test captain, coupled with his strong ODI track record, makes him a promising choice to lead the side.
Notably, just minutes before the official announcement of India’s ODI squad for the Australia series, Gill led India to a commanding innings victory over the West Indies in Ahmedabad, highlighting his leadership credentials.
### Batting Excellence: Gill’s ODI Statistics
Gill has featured in 55 ODIs, amassing 2,775 runs with an outstanding batting average of 59.04, which is currently the best among players with at least 2,000 ODI runs, according to ESPNcricinfo. His strike rate stands just shy of 100 at 99.56. Throughout his ODI career, Gill has recorded eight centuries and seven fifties, with a career-best score of 208 against New Zealand in 2023.
### End of an Era: Rohit Sharma’s Captaincy Legacy
Gill becomes the 28th ODI captain in India’s cricket history, marking the end of Rohit Sharma’s four-year reign. Under Rohit’s leadership, India finished as runners-up in the 2023 ODI World Cup and clinched the Champions Trophy title after 12 years. Rohit remains one of only seven Indian men to have captained at least 50 ODIs, leading India to 42 wins out of 56 matches and achieving an impressive 75% win percentage (with 12 losses, one tie, and one no-result).
As India prepares to take on Australia in their next ODI series, all eyes will be on Shubman Gill as he embarks on this new chapter of leadership in Indian cricket.
